Reem Acra’s City Guide: New York

Reem Acra’s City Guide: New York

Having been a New Yorker since 1983, Acra shares her tips on where to go, what to eat, and how to survive in the city that never sleeps.

Restaurants

I love too many to pick just one. Dinnerwith friends is one of my favorite simple pleasures, and New York City has no shortage of amazing places.

ABC Kitchen
I love all of Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s restaurants (I also count him as a friend- and designed his wedding attire!) ABC Kitchen is a tried-and-true staple of New York restaurants and a perennial favorite of mine.

ILILI
I come here for the delicious Lebanese food and the fun, relaxed atmosphere. I love bringing a big group of friends and filling the table with shared plates and lots of laughter.

Legacy Records
I love visiting the latest and greatest restaurants that New York has to offer, and this is my current go-to for out of town guests. It’s fun, lively and delicious.

The Grill
Located in the old Seagram’s building, The Grill is a throwback to old New York. It’s formal and elegant, perfect for a romantic evening.

The Polo Bar
Classic Americana at its best. I enjoy sitting at the bar for a fun and quick meal.

The Nomad
This is my go-to spot for breakfast, you will often find me here! The staff is wonderful, they know me by name (and my standing order of avocado toast) I’m also a big fan of evening drinks at the bar here. It’s a great place for people watching.

Drinks

The Baccarat Hotel
Elegant for cocktails, and also a great place for tea. It’s across the street from the MOMA, a favorite museum, so I like to bring out of town guests to recharge here after a museum visit.

Hotel Delmano
A trip to Brooklyn is always a fun adventure, the youthful energy is contagious. Hotel Delmano is super chic and has great cocktails,

Favorite weekend activity

I spend my weekends in Alpine, New Jersey. A favorite spot is the Davis Johnson Gardens. It’s a beautiful, small garden just outside of the city (fun fact: our Resort lookbook was shot there!)

Favorite Hidden NYC Treasure

The Waterfall Mansion
The mansion is the brainchild of Kate Shin, who creates a rotating curation of art based on a theme. It’s a hidden gem, open by appointment only- which creates a quiet and peaceful way to experience art in an ultra-private setting.

Best Part about Living in NYC

The energy! And the fast pace. I love that you can get things done at any hour in NY. It’s not unusual for me to have a 7am manicure, or a 9pm hair appointment. I will call on GlamSquad, for appointments during odd hours.

Favorite Clothing Store

Dover Street Market
I wear a lot of Japanese designers- I’m a big fan of Sacai, and Comme des Garcons and this store is the coolest place to shop in NY.

Favorite Neighborhood

I’ve been busy exploring my new neighborhood- the Upper West Side. I’m right near Lincoln Center, so this fall I plan on seeing plenty of ballet and opera. The best place for a walk is the Hudson River Park, along the river.

Best Coffee Shop

Madmen Espresso
Right next to my office, it’s my go to. My standing order: cappuccino to go.

Where I Go to Get Inspired

I’m most inspired at home. My apartment has the most wonderful views of the river.

Best People Watching Spot

The Carlyle Hotel
There’s a spot between Bemelman’s Bar and the bathroom at the Carlyle Hotel, that is the best people watching in all of New York!

Harry Cipriani
There are several Cipriani outposts around New York and I love them all for a great drink and even better people watching.

Favorite Memory of New York

I have many fond memories of just simply walking around New York, looking into windows and feeling the energy and pulse of the city. There is no place in the world like New York City.

Advice for aspiring New Yorkers

New York can be a tough place, you have to be strong. Dream big and work hard. The city will give you back the energy and drive you give to it.
